Lake Natron

Lake Natron

Lake Natron, in northern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, is one of Africa’s most surreal landscapes. Its waters, often glowing red and orange from salt-loving microorganisms, stretch across the Rift Valley floor beneath the dramatic slopes of Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. Despite its harsh, alkaline conditions sometimes reaching 60°C the lake is the only regular breeding ground for East Africa’s 2.5 million lesser flamingos, making it a critical sanctuary for this near-threatened species.

Why Visit?

  • Witness thousands of flamingos against crimson waters a sight found nowhere else in the world.

  • Explore Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God,” the world’s only active carbonatite volcano.

  • Experience Maasai culture in nearby villages.

  • Enjoy remote wilderness far from Tanzania’s busier safari parks.

What to Expect

The area is hot, dry, and remote, with limited facilities ideal for adventurous travelers. Swimming in the lake isn’t possible due to its caustic waters, but nearby waterfalls, natural pools, and volcanic scenery offer refreshing and dramatic experiences. Best flamingo viewing is from June to October.
