Itinerary
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your driver-guide welcomes you and within just 1 to 1.5 hours you reach Arusha National Park. The transition from the busy town to the cool forests at the foot of Mount Meru is refreshing. Inside the park, giraffes glide across the grassy clearings, while buffalo and warthogs graze nearby. The family enjoys the shimmering Momella Lakes, where flamingos cover the surface in pink, and children giggle at colobus monkeys leaping between branches. A short walking safari with an armed ranger makes the day even more exciting and safe for kids. By late afternoon, you return to your lodge in Arusha to rest, ready for the adventures ahead.
After breakfast, the safari vehicle heads south, and after 2 to 3 hours’ drive, you enter Tarangire National Park. Almost immediately, the iconic baobab trees appear, their massive trunks towering like ancient guardians. Soon the family spots the first herds of elephants, some bathing in the Tarangire River, others pulling at branches with their trunks. Lions rest in the shade while zebras and giraffes pass calmly by. By evening, as the sun sets over the park, you arrive at your tented camp or lodge, where the distant trumpeting of elephants is your lullaby.
The day begins early for the long but rewarding journey to the Serengeti. From Tarangire, the drive takes about 6 to 7 hours, passing through the fertile Ngorongoro Highlands, dotted with Maasai villages, and eventually descending into the endless plains of the Serengeti. Game viewing begins even before you reach Central Serengeti. Wildebeest and zebras stretch across the horizon, giraffes move elegantly through acacia groves, and predators are never far away. By afternoon, you arrive at your lodge in Central Serengeti (Seronera Valley), a place famous for its concentration of big cats. The evening is spent by the campfire, with the distant roar of lions echoing in the night.
A full day is dedicated to exploring the wildlife-rich Seronera area. With no long transfers today, you enjoy game drives at your own pace. Early in the morning, lions are often seen hunting, while leopards laze in the branches of acacia trees. Along the Seronera River, elephants gather to drink, and hippos wallow in muddy pools. The family enjoys a picnic lunch beneath a spreading acacia, watching giraffes cross the plain. The afternoon brings more sightings perhaps cheetahs scanning from a termite mound or hyenas trotting across the grass. As the sun sets, the sky glows in gold and crimson, marking the end of another unforgettable Serengeti day.
After breakfast, you continue deeper into the Serengeti, driving about 5 to 6 hours northwards, with game drives along the way. The scenery shifts from open plains to rolling hills and scattered woodlands. By afternoon, you reach the Northern Serengeti, where the mighty Mara River winds its way through the land. Depending on the season, the family may witness the Great Migration as wildebeest and zebras mass nervously at the riverbanks, preparing to cross the crocodile-filled waters. Tonight, your tented camp by the river provides front-row access to one of nature’s grandest theaters.
Today is devoted to exploring the northern plains and the Mara River. With no long transfers, the focus is purely on wildlife. At dawn, the air vibrates with the grunts of wildebeest, and if you are fortunate, you may see the thrilling spectacle of thousands crossing the river—hooves splashing, dust flying, and crocodiles lurking below. Away from the river, elephants browse in the woodlands, giraffes stretch for tender leaves, and lions patrol the plains. The afternoon is more relaxed, with time at camp before another evening drive as the golden light softens the landscape.
The family enjoys a second full day in this wilderness, exploring the Lobo Valley, which lies about an hour’s drive from the Mara River. This area is quieter, offering a sense of remoteness. Lions are often found basking on kopjes, cheetahs perch on mounds, and leopards lurk among the granite outcrops. A picnic lunch is taken beneath shady fig trees, with the sweeping plains spread before you. The day ends with stories shared around the campfire, where children learn about Maasai culture and the secrets of animal survival.
After breakfast, the safari turns south again. This is one of the longer journeys, taking 7 to 8 hours as you cross the Serengeti plains once more, enjoying game viewing along the way. Ostriches race across the grasslands, hyenas move in groups, and antelopes scatter at the sound of the vehicle. As you climb into the Ngorongoro Highlands, the scenery shifts dramatically to fertile pastures and Maasai villages. By late afternoon, you arrive at a lodge perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, where the view of the vast caldera at sunset is breathtaking.
The final day begins with an early descent into the crater itself, a journey of just 30 minutes down the rim road. The crater floor feels like a natural sanctuary, alive with animals at every turn. Buffalo and wildebeest graze side by side, elephants stride across the grasslands, and lions patrol the open areas. In the swamps, hippos grunt lazily, while flamingos line the lakeshores in delicate pink bands. If luck favors you, a black rhino may appear, completing the Big Five in one morning. After a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, you begin the 4 to 5-hour drive back to Arusha, with an additional hour if heading directly to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The safari ends here, but the memories of nine extraordinary days remain with your family forever.
