Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is Tanzania’s fourth-largest national park, covering over 3,230 square kilometers. Nestled between the Uluguru Mountains to the northeast and the Lumango Mountains to the south, Mikumi forms part of the larger Selous ecosystem, bordering Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). It is easily accessible by road, lying just 283 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam along the highway to Iringa, making it one of the most convenient safari destinations in southern Tanzania.

Mikumi is often described as a “mini Serengeti”, due to its open horizons and abundance of wildlife, but without the crowds found in the more famous northern parks. Whether you’re on a short safari from Dar or combining it with a longer southern circuit itinerary, Mikumi delivers an unforgettable experience.

Why Mikumi for Tanzania Safaris

  • Easy Accessibility: Unlike remote parks, Mikumi is a 4-5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam, making it perfect for weekend getaways or short safaris.

  • Abundant Wildlife: Offers a rich concentration of wildlife including elephants, lions, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, hippos, and over 400 species of birds.

  • Affordable & Less Crowded: Mikumi is budget-friendly compared to Serengeti or Ngorongoro, and it offers a more personal, peaceful safari experience.

  • Diverse Landscapes: From grassy plains to thick miombo woodlands and baobab-studded hills—Mikumi is a photographer’s dream.

  • Perfect Add-On: Ideal to combine with Ruaha, Udzungwa Mountains, and Nyerere for a full southern circuit safari.
